In this scenario, the motor behaves akin to a transformer, where the run winding functions as the primary winding, and the start winding operates as the secondary winding. Consequently, the capacitor is assigned a significantly higher voltage rating than the standard 230 volts of the supply voltage.

However, the reverse is not true – a 370-volt capacitor cannot replace a 440-volt one. Attempting to do so may initially function, but it will lead to premature failure. Exceeding the capacitor's rated voltage causes the dielectric to break down, resulting in a short circuit. This is analogous to using a 600V-rated wire, which is superior to a 300V-rated one. Additionally, when replacing capacitors, it is crucial to ensure that the capacitance (µF or MFD) matches the original value or stays within a 10% increase or 5% decrease.
Example: 50 µF cap can be substituted by 47.5 to 55 µF with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor . Round oval-shaped run capacitors are commonly used for air conditioning, to help in the starting of the compressor and the condenser fan motor.
